workweek. you're looking live in san jose this morning where temperatures are around the freezing mark. it's really cold out. one of those wear a sweater days and bundle up. and this is what happened in san jose over the weekend. freezing weather responsible possibly for a busted water main. some streets were flooded when a pipe burst close to spartan stadium. a couple of nearby businesses ran dry. and that's why it's important to protect the pipes, pets, and people. >> we have pets and people -- >> pets and plants on the graphic. and we couldn't fit the other two. so people and pipes. the 4 ps. it's cold outside. and we have a freeze warning in effect in the inland valleys. that's where it's the coldest. and we have frost advisories on the coast and by. and the red spots with the
coldest areas. and protect all of the above. it's definitely a cold morning. the third straight morning of the mornings being posted. hopefully, we start to warm up shortly. we are below freezing in santa rosa, napa, fairfield, concord, livermore. 43 in san francisco. and 39 in oakland. those are the milder spots. the coast and the bay are waking up warmer. highs in the 50s. everyone rebounds so right around the same temperature range. you can see mainly in the low to mid-50s. 53 in san francisco. and mid-50s in oakland. and 51 the high in fairfield. and 53 in concord. it's a spare the air day. you're encouraged to stay off the roads and use mass transit and for sure no wood burning. no fireplaces. it's not advised. the air is pretty unhealthy. it's really stagnant air and
not a lot of wind. milder weather is on the way, especially by the middle of the week. we'll show you the christmas day forecast coming up. first, here's rocky. >> we've got breaking news in the danville area this morning where a big rig crash is creating some problems on the i- 680 commute. this is video from just over an hour ago. and you can see the mess left over from the crash. we'll go to rocky for the latest on the traffic impact. >> thank you, michelle. inside been going on for 2 1/2 hours, and it's slowing down traffic significantly in the danville area. let's take a live picture. we have the photographer out there. and you can see the packages on the side of the road. and traffic is moving slowly. the traffic now is moving even worse behind it. it's backed up all the way to south main street. use danville boulevard as the
alternate route. this is southbound 680. it's an overturned usps truck and packages on the road blocking the two right lanes. and traffic is moving at 6 miles per hour. take danville boulevard. moving to slow conditions on the altamont pass coming off 285 and tracy. just 11 miles per hour. so you're crawling your way. and then it frees up through livermore. and here's a live look at the slow commute traffic. 580 westbound -- 16 minutes. the deadly warehouse fire in oakland brought out a lot of emotions and in some cases, sharp disagreement. two groups that had been sparring are working together. >> and jackie ward is joining us. >> it's been two weeks since the ghost ship fire and tributes are being held to remember those who died.
the latest at the barbecue chain everett & jones in oakland. they called it a candlelight individual until the name of love. the warehouse salt lick often hosts un-permitted parties. and it seems both sides have set aside their differences for now. >> all life in the city needs to come together. >> everett jones will now hold fundraising concerts every month to raise money for salt lick and other venues. they want to bring buildings up to code and make sure nobody gets evicted in the process. we'll detail more in the next half hour. there are a lot of warehouses in the bay area that serve purposes similar to the ghost ship warehouse. and we heard there's a new campaign aimed at them. >> it brings up a lot of safety concerns for the buildings.
>> we have a clip of the video. >> this video is intended to provide a few basic steps to make the party safer. >> reporter: they have created a fire safety video that provides a list of things to look for the at parties held in warehouses. according to the video. each room should have two exits and anyone who sees smoke should leave the area. the advice is not just for underground parties but other events as well. >> anything that keeps people safe. this morning, the investigation into a tree collapse that killed one person in a los angeles county park continues. that tree fell onto a wedding party taking pictures. cell phone video captured the aftermath at the park in whittier. an older woman was killed. she was the mother of the bride. five others were injured, including a 4-year-old who is in critical condition. the park is still closed and
the city is calling in ann arborist to determine what caused the tree to fall. yesterday morning on san miguel avenue north of 580. when fire crews got the call just after 6 a.m. they were battling heavy smoke and flames from the start. firefighters managed to reach the second floor and pull a woman from the flames, but she was pronounced dead at the scene. this is the second deadly fire in a week. and crews say it was an especially tough outcome to stomach. >> this is really hard on the firefighters. our job is to protect the citizens. and so when we go in and try to rescue someone and we're not successful, it's tough. >> now alameda firefighters are asking the public to keep fire
safety in mind over the holidays, double checking smoke detectors. the state is installing 1000 new metal detectors and scanners. they are expected to be in place by july. thousands of illegal phones get into the hands of inmates. today is expected to be the busiest mailing day of the year for letters, cards, and holiday packages. that's according to the u.s. postal service which says it will be the busiest online day. the postal service anticipates 750 million packages will be delivered this holiday season. and private companies are struggling to keep up with the demand. ups is renting u-haul trucks to make delivers. some people called police in
concord. what better way to get ready for christmas than to gather for a thousand people and go on a run in downtown san jose. it was a big turnout for the santa run, a 5k run and walk with a lot of folks in santa. >> the mayor hopes the events will see big crowds all year. >> we've seen a very impressive revitalization of downtown. but we're not going to see a lot of retail until we have many more thousands of people living in downtown. >> christmas in the park is free and open to the public through new year's day. 10 minutes after 6:00. and a massive manhunt is underway after a 3-year-old boy is killed in a road rage attack. and deserving kids in the bay area get an early christmas

head to the playoff for first time in a decade. coast and bay to protect the pets, plants, people, and pipes. temperatures this afternoon, we'll rebound to the 50s. temperatures are consistent. only a few degrees of each other. mid-50s in oakland and fremont. and a high of 53 in concord. and it's a spare the air day. the first this winter season. the air quality is not great. pretty stagnant. no word burning. use mass transit. we'll have more and when will we warm up? i'll send it to michelle. and we have breaking news in the danville area this morning. this is where a big rig crash is creating a lot of problems on the i-680 commute. this is video from two hours ago. and you can see the mess left over from the crash. let's go to rocky for the latest. now it's been three hours that the crash has been working in danville. let's take a look at the map to
give you a more in-depth understanding of how it's affecting the traffic. an overturned delivery truck and packages on the roadway. i was taking a look at the live feed and the truck is turned up now. crews are making progress and the traffic is delayed and very slow. you see it's moving at 7 miles per hour. and now it's backed up to the walnut creek interchange. if this area is part of your morning commute you know what kind of congestion that can cause. use danville boulevard and avoid the area all together. this is highway 17 and i want to warn you. there is black ice on the roadways. after you listen to liz, there are freezing temperatures all around the area. and we're looking at highway 17
year the lexington reservoir. they are pouring sand on the roads to help the ice melt away. if you hit ice, turn in the direction of the skid and do not slam on the brakes. that's very important. and we have a bart delay between concord and pleasant hill and it's in the sfo and bay point directions. muni and caltrain on time. i will send it back to you guys. disagreement after the deadly warehouse fire in oakland seems to be fading with two sides joining forces. >> here's the kpix's jackie ward. >> reporter: the two groups are setting aside major differences for something they can both agree on. the oakland barbecue chain everett & jones held a candlelight vigil.

good morning. welcome back. i know we've been talking a lot about the freeze warnings, and frost advisories and those are set to expire by 8 a.m. we'll see lots of sunshine. and temperatures still on the cooler side. a lot of 50s around the bay. 52 in antioch. and 52 in walnut creek. 53 in pleasant hill, vallejo. around the coast and bay. alameda, 53 degrees. 54 in berkeley. so pretty similar temperature spread. by the afternoon, 50s in the far north areas. 57 in wine country in saint he will lee in a. we'll tell you which day will be the warmest and take a look at the christmas day and christmas eve forecast. elon musk has had an impact
on the ground with tesla and way above the ground with spacex. and now he's heading underground. >> good morning and i don't think anybody would ever describe elon musk as boring, but that's the business he wants to get into -- digging tunnels. in a series of tweets, the traffic drives him nuts and he wants to dig through to a solution and start a company called the boring liz. investors in the market are skeptical. he has a vision for a hyper loop, an aboveground tube to carry people around in transit. with elon musk never make a big bet against him. apple and ireland will be
appealing an order from the european union ordering it to pay back taxes. ireland is not happy. it will appeal. it says that the eu is picking on apple because it's a big target. the eu is going after a lot of u.s. companies saying it amounts to illegal state aid. the stock market is opening in positive territory after slight losses on friday. it will be a fairly quiet week ahead of the holidays. let's see how we're doing. the dow is up by 30 points. the nasdaq is up by 10 and the s&p 500 is moving higher by four points. it's 6:43 and let's get a check on traffic. we have a postal truck causing a huge mess and i think a lot of people's christmas presents are strewn on the roadway. >> exactly. and today happens to be the
busiest usps day for deliver services. this is not a good look for us. in danville, a lot of packages on the side of the road. and progress crews have made. but the overturned truck is upright. and crews are trying to settle the scene. and traffic is backed up all the way to the walnut creek interchange. let's take a look at the map and show you how traffic is flowing. it's backed up to the walnut creek interchange. and the pleasant hill traffic is usually there. avoid the area at all costs and use danville boulevard instead. that's moving at 6 miles per hour. a big mess in danville on southbound 680. and a heavy commute at the bay bridge toll plaza. the maze -- that was 30 minutes and now it's 21 minutes so that's not as bad. expect a 20-minute drive to downtown san francisco.
and the from hayward to foster city, a 20-minute drive between 880 and -- and between the concord and pleasant hill bart stations, a 10 minute delay if you're headed to the san francisco station. muni and caltrain are on time. and we have black ice throughout the bay area. >> maybe on the overpasses and bridges you may find a bit of moisture. we are remaining high and dry. over the next seven days, no major rain events in the forecast. and what we're focused on the cold weather. we have frost advisories along the coast and bay. temperatures from the 20s and 30s. and we like to say protect the 4 p's. the pets and plants. and don't forget about the pipes and of course the people. probably number one.

and melissa caen will be there. >> i'm so excited. >> the electoral college voting today is the hottest reality show. who knew that this year that would be the most exciting thing? but it is. all 50 states plus the district of columbia get to meet to vote on the next president. there are 538 electors and why? >> the number of electors is the number of senators and members of congress. and that's how we got that total funky number of 538. each state also getting the total number of senators plus members of congress. california has a total of 55 electors, the most of any state in the union. >> a lot of power in their hands today. >> who are these electors? >> these are party loyal itselfs for the most part. the party that wins gets to
pick the electors. the electors in california are democrats picked by the democratic party. they are loyal to the party and many have a long history. >> we've heard about efforts to get electors to vote against donald trump. >> the electors have been getting spammed and phone calls. and there are going to be some that vote weird. let's start with the democrats. some will vote for bernie sanders or donald duck or whomever. they want to test the state laws. there are laws in states like california that say electors have to vote like the popular vote. but the laws have never been challenged. a vote today for mickey mouse pushes the envelope. and there may be legal challenges that come out of this. but that's probably going to affect the 2020 election more than this year.
>> they can vote for whomever they want. what's to stop them? >> we don't know. remember the electors are chosen by the winning political party. they are loyal to the party. they are not likely to change their minds. but if they do. there would be a legal fight. and even democrats might break the rules in order to test them. when we see people defect it will probably be democrats trying to test the waters. >> could the electors change the outcome of the election. >> technically, yes. it would take 37 republican electors to change the election results. but even if they did, even if they prevented trump from being crowned. it doesn't mean he loses. >> if known gets the majority, the current house gets to pick.
but they can only choose from someone who got -- they can only pick clinton or trump. even if trump doesn't win today, it would go to the house of representatives where the republicans are dominant and trump would probably win. it's going to be excitementment but at the end of the day, it will be trump probably. >> watch at 6:00 for a live update. >> we'll be right back. ,,,,,,

low avenue -- cabrillo avenue. out the door right now. the freeze warnings and frost advisories still posted. they should be out for another hour or so. they are set to expire at 8 a.m. temperatures below freezing in the inland valleys. santa rosa, napa, 30 in livermore. it's going to feel warmer in san francisco and oakland coming in at 41 and 38 degrees. by the afternoon, we're all going to hit the 50s. mid-50s in oakland. 54 in livermore. we should see plenty of sunshine by this afternoon. and it will stay on the cooler side. about 5 degrees below average for this time of year. we warm up slightly by tomorrow. and warmer still by wednesday. and wednesday should be the warmest day of the week. and a few more clouds roll in by friday keeping temperatures on the cooler side. and it should be dry, lots of sunshine. and seasonal for christmas eve
and christmas day. >> a new video showing just how cold it is in michigan. this is drone video from saint joseph along lake michigan. you can see the lighthouse is completely frozen over. and a lot of people are calling it a frozen castle. and wind chills have made it feel several degrees below zero. one california couple finally decided to tie the knot. proving that it's never too late. >> after decades of dates, the couple got hitched in secret. and bill and linda confess the families were in shock. it shouldn't have been too surprising. >> just trying to make the other person happy. just put the other person first and make the goal of making the person happy. >> his 96-year-old mom says it's the christmas present she's been waiting for. >> for 41 years. >> what about grandchildren?
